Thai Green Papaya Salad Som Tum

Among the tom kha kai, tom yum koong, pad Thai, and the delicious curries, som tam (papaya salad) is ranked high on the list of top Thai culinary treasures. This dish has the perfect combination of Thai flavors —salty, sweet, spicy, and sour.

This wonderful Asian salad recipe, is great to serve as a starter during an Asian themed dinner party. You can prepare the dressing in advance, so all you have to do when the guests are at the table, is combine and pound the ingredients.

Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Put the garlic, chilies and long beans (or green beans into a mortar and pound roughly. You may not do this quantity in one go, so do it in batches.
  2. Add the papaya and pound again to slightly bruise the ingredients.
  3. Then add the fish sauce, lime juice, palm sugar and dried shrimps (if using) and stir together using the pestle and a spoon until the palm sugar has desolved.
  4. Add the anchovy sauce (if using) and tomatoes and give it one pound and a good stir to combine.
  5. Then add half of the peanuts and mix together.
  6. Dress in heaps on plates, and sprinkle with the rest of the peanuts.
